This review is LONG overdue as keyword research is really one of the fundamental cornerstones of success online and Market Samurai is one of our favorite tools – we should have reviewed it a long time ago. We first came across it when it debuted last year. In fact, we’ve been using it since it launched via Niche Blueprint (you’ll see the Niche Blueprint branding in the videos). Market Samurai in 2010 has grown up even further, though, honestly its core features have remained much the same and we really only use it for a small subset of its features.
As we’ve said before and in the Micro Niche Finder review as well, keyword research is something that you can do without any commercial software and do it for free. The thing is, why would you want to? If you’re at all serious about making money online, then you’ve got to understand that keyword research is the absolute paramount most important skill that you master. You can be the best linkbuilder or SEO guru on the planet, you could sell sand in the desert, but if you don’t understand keyword research, well, you’re gonna struggle and probably not be successful online. So, if keyword research is that essential, wouldn’t it be the most logical place to start investing in your business? We think so.
Now, we recommend a double approach of using both Micro Niche Finder and Market Samurai together. Why? Because that’s how we do it. There are many heated discussions and questions on the Net like “Which is better Market Samurai or Micro Niche Finder” or “Can you compare Micro Niche Finder versus Market Samurai” – our feeling is that both are good and yet both are flawed. Therefore, we combine both and use both extensively because as a team they complement each other well. Micro Niche Finder, as its name implies, is great for uncovering good potential keywords to go after. However, it’s elementary “SOC” indicator (Strength of Competition) leaves a lot to be desired. We use it to filter down from hundreds to tens of keywords and then use Samurai to refine that list to our primary focus keywords (you’ll see why in just a minute). Micro Niche Finder is also good when you are looking to expand your keyword map with more longtails. In short we use Micro Niche Finder for “keyword research” and we use Market Samurai for “keyword competitive analysis”.
Market Samurai has a lot of features – many more than you are likely to use – but one and only one that as far as we’re concerned is worth its weight in gold. SEO Competitive Analysis – that is by far the best single feature of Market Samurai. In a nutshell, it gives you a snapshot view of the most important data for all of your competitors (those who hold positions #1 thru #10 for the keyword you are chasing) in one convenient, color coded chart. Take a look.
As you can see the competitive analysis is very powerful and easy. To be truthful about 80% of what we do in Market Samurai is just on this page. You can see in the video that there is an export button in the bottom right and you can easily export this data to Excel. Furthermore, when you do the backlink analysis you can also export that data – the backlinks, the pagerank, and the anchor text info.
While we feel that the competitive analysis module is the most powerful there are several others and for users who don’t have the luxury of buying several tools they will likely be very satisfied with these other modules. Here is a list of the modules that Market Samurai offers:
- Rank Tracker
- Keyword Research
- Find Content
- Publish Content
Now, if I went into detail on all of these this review would end up being a book. There is a Market Samurai Free trial and I highly recommend you do that so you can “test it out” for yourself with no risk whatsoever. Being completely frank with you, we don’t use most of these modules. But that’s okay. Most of the tools we buy we don’t use all of the features of them either. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. Let’s just take a look, however, at my other “favorite find” in Market Samurai and a very useful tool for many Internet Marketers – Rank Tracker.
Now, Rank Tracker in Market Samurai is *not* what we use for all of our tracking that we do for our sites and SEO client sites and for good reason – dedicated rank tracking software is much better at it. The software we use is Rank Tracker by SEO Powersuite. There are many reasons why and that will be the topic of another review in the near future. However, Market Samurai’s rank tracking module will probably be adequate for many users and has some advanced features as well such as the ability to track multiple domains for a single project and to show multiple returns for a single keyword – ideal for chasing double listings.
The other module that should be discussed is the Keyword Research module. Now, clearly, for a keyword research tool this is very important. Market Samurai is a very capable keyword research tool and has a tremendous number of options, criteria and filters that you can control to get exactly what you are looking for. As I’ve said, personally, I prefer Micro Niche Finder for this level of high level keyword research, but Samurai is a great tool in its own right. Take a look at the quick video below to see for yourself.
There are many, many keyword research software programs available and trust me, we’ve tried most, if not all of them. For me, I always come back to Micro Niche Finder for broad research and Market Samurai for detailed analysis. The question that we get all of the time is “what if I can only afford to buy one – which one should I get?”. That question really comes down to a personal choice. Honestly when we first bought Micro Niche Finder we weren’t all that impressed on our initial casual usage of it, but in time we grew to love its function and simplicity. Personal tastes will always have a great influence. The thing is, Samurai does many things that Micro Niche Finder does not – competitive analysis and rank tracking being at the forefront of that list (though there are several others as listed above in the various modules). So if you could only buy one, then you would probably be better served by Market Samurai so that you get some other great tools as well. The thing is, all of its individual modules should really be considered as “bonuses” and not the reason to purchase. The forte of Market Samurai is its competitive analysis – the rest just comes along for the ride.
What We Don’t Like About Market Samurai
No tool is perfect, but when it comes to competitive analysis Market Samurai is pretty darn good. For super in-depth competitive analysis with much, much more detailed information I’ve yet to see a tool that outperforms SEO SpyGlass. They truly are the benchmark for comparison. We own and use their entire Enterprise Suite of tools; primarily Rank Tracker and SEO SpyGlass. However, that being said, for most competitive analysis Market Samurai is all we want to see and as far as we go. If we really want to dig further, we’ll move over to SEO SpyGlass. The reason is that Market Samurai gives you the essential information you need and does so very quickly and in a very convenient visual format which makes processing the information very fast as well. Generally, that’s as far as we go. What’s missing is a lot more detailed information and a solid reporting module or automation tools. That’s where SEO SpyGlass and the entire SEO Powersuite really shine because you can schedule jobs to run at night, export directly to a SQL database, generate customizable and brandable reports and many, many other features. If you have clients or a lot of domains, you’re gonna want to go with a tool the caliber of SEO Powersuite. However, for many, Market Samurai will do all they need.
The Rank Tracking in Market Samurai is good and it is flexible, but I have found it to not be nearly as accurate as Rank Tracker from SEO Powersuite. Also, if ever there were a task begging to be automated it is rank tracking – there simply is no more mind numbing procedure than clicking the mouse and endlessly waiting for the tracking results to come back. With Market Samurai, that’s your only choice. Rank Tracker allows you to schedule tasks – a much, much more powerful solution.
Market Samurai is available at an extremely affordable price considering all that it does. The advertised price is $149, however if you download the free trial and you purchase within the first 7 days of your trial the price is only $97. If for some reason you don’t get it within that time frame the price does go up to $149, so it behooves you to get it within the 7 day trial period. Additionally, one thing we failed to mention is that the training and support provided by Market Samurai is second to none, the training they offer you is worth way more than the price of the tool alone.
