Keywords Magnet Review
Overview
The keyword research niche is pretty crowded – in fact, even with our top picks we have several on this site. The reason is that no one tool seems to do it all. Keywords Magnet is another such tool – a great all around solution. However, it has several features that make it a great selection if you’re only going to purchase one tool for keyword research, but for a more complete tool we still like and recommend Micro Niche Finder.
How Keywords Magnet Works
Keywords Magnet takes a bit of a different approach to finding your keywords than many other tools. It is very similar to Keyword Snatcher from Jonathan Ledger (no longer being sold), though it does more and does a better job at finding long tails as well. Rather than just rely purely on Adwords data like most of the tools, Keywords Magnet also scours for keywords using the Google Suggest keywords as well as those from other search engines including Yahoo, Bing, Ask, AOL, Search.com, Google Shopping, Amazon and YouTube.
In case you’re not familiar with the Google Suggest feature, just go to Google.com and begin typing in a search. The Google Suggest will pop down or suggest some keywords based on the letters you are typing. This data is considered to be some of the best keyword data because Google and other search engines clearly want to deliver the best user experience possible. So these “suggestion” keywords tend to be the most popular and related searches they can offer.
The approach is very simplistic, but don’t let that fool you. The results are very, very good and this tool is very good at finding long tails that most other tools (including Keyword Snatcher) miss. We were very pleasantly surprised by the results. When we found this tool it appeared to be a knock off of Jonathan Leger’s Keyword Snatcher (which is no longer being sold) and so that intrigued us. Honestly, we’re not sure which tool came first, so we have to make sure and state that we just know that they are both very closely related in both appearance and functionality though Keywords Magnet has much more expanded functionality than does Keyword Snatcher.
Using the tool is fairly simple. You enter your keyword to search for and then set a few other settings (if you wish) or just take their defaults. You can perform the search at a level 1 or a deep level 2 search. All that means is that level 2 is a more exhaustive and deeper search that will return many more results but it is also much slower. You can also set optional filters (very useful) as well as geographical targeting and choose your search engines to use for keyword data – they default to the big three (Google, Yahoo and Bing). Here’s a screen shot of the primary page.

Now, we already mentioned above the fact that Keywords Magnet allows you to filter your keywords but we want to expand on this a bit more. This can really save you a bunch of time because you can automatically remove keywords that contain phrases you don’t want such as “free” to eliminate the freebie hunters or popular other keywords that just cloud up your results pages such as “crack” or “torrent” or “scam”, etc… This is a nice feature that makes the end results much more targeted. Also, you can take the opposite approach and only include keywords that match a particular sub phrase. Pick your poison, but either way, the filter option is a nice feature. Here’s a look at the filter screen.

After you have performed the keyword retrieval there are a few options of things you can do with the set of keywords retrieved. Of course you can copy them to the clipboard (all or selected) or export them, but there are a couple of other features as well. For example, you can select a sub-set of them and click the Spin Selected Text button and it will create a spin block with all of the selected keywords and copy it right onto the clipboard for you.
The next couple of options available to you are more useful and you’ll likely use them all of the time – the Analyze Keyword and Analyze Competition buttons. After you retrieve your keywords you can click on one and then choose either of these options.
- Analyze Competition – This feature is almost an identical copy of the Market Samurai SEO competition screen. Again, we have to disclose that we do not know which product was released first so it may be that Samurai copied this tool – we’re not sure. Either way, the result is that you can see the same data. We really like this competitive analysis screen because it shows you all of the pertinent SEO data for the top 10 results for your desired keyword. In one screen you can really get a quick snapshot of what the competition looks like and how difficult ranking will likely be. You will get data on domain age, page rank, indexed pages, domain and page backlinks, and much more. See the image below.
- Analyze Keyword – This feature will let you drill down on a single keyword and pull up a bunch of meta data for that keyword such as competing results in search (both broad and exact), results in Google News, results in Amazon, Ebay, Clickbank and EzineArticles.com as well. See the screen shot below.

Unique Features
There are a couple of other features that also should be mentioned that are very useful. Keywords Magnet will allow you to setup software proxies which can be very useful when performing a lot of keyword analysis in order to prevent IP bans for excessive queries (though we’ve never experienced this with Keywords Magnet in our use of it over the past couple months). Proxy support is not likely to be necessary for most, but it is certainly a nice to have feature and can become critical if you need it.
Another feature that we really like is so simple, yet many keyword research tools do not support it and that is the ability to import keywords. Many of the keyword research tools don’t allow you to import your own keywords and so this is a nice little feature to have. Again, nothing earth shattering, but nice to have all the same.
Comparing Keywords Magnet to Keyword Snatcher
So to give you an idea of how it compares to Keyword Snatcher in terms of keywords retrieved we ran the same search through both tools – “article marketing”. Now, for Keyword Snatcher it returned 160 results and 224 results for its deep search option. Running the same search on Keywords Magnet returned 491 results and 825 results for its deep search option (Level 2). For both tools we only looked at the top three search engines in order to make sure we were comparing apples to apples. As you can see, you will get a lot more data and possibilities of good long tail keywords to check out via Keywords Magnet.
There is more, however, to a search tool than just how many results it brings you and that is where Keywords Magnet really shines over Keyword Snatcher. Both tools have very similar base features. Both can take the selected keywords and spin them together in a spin block and copy it to the clipboard for you, for example. And both have random niche generators. Keyword Snatcher, however, lacks the filtering capability that Keywords Magnet provides.
But the big difference is that Keywords Magnet offers a whole set of features that Keyword Snatcher does not. Keyword Snatcher just pulls back this list of keywords and that is pretty much it. Meaning that it is a very narrow use tool and is not really meant to be a standalone keyword research tool but rather a specialty tool that complements your other keyword research tools. And indeed, that is the way we had always used Keyword Snatcher.
Keywords Magnet, however, offers much more robust features and can serve as your only keyword research tool and for a competitive price. See above where we talk in depth about the Analyze Keyword and Analyze Competition features offered by Keywords Magnet – you won’t find them in Keyword Snatcher. There doesn’t appear to be a single option or feature in Keyword Snatcher that is not available in Keywords Magnet, so it can be a full replacement for a tool that we loved for months and is no longer available for sale.
Comparing Keywords Magnet to Market Samurai
There are many things that Market Samurai does that Keywords Magnet does not, so this is not meant to be a full product comparison but rather a single feature comparison of the competitive analysis capabilities of both. In Market Samurai this feature is called the SEO Competition and in Keywords Magnet it is called Analyze Competition – but its virtually identical. Here’s a side by side view of both.

As you can see, the same information is presented in almost an identical format. Both tools also allow you to add your own URL to the grid so that you can compare your site to the top 10 results. So from this standpoint, we really like Keywords Magnet as a product that can add this competitive research feature to an already very good long tail keyword research tool. This is our favorite feature of both of these tools.
Comparing Keywords Magnet to Micro Niche Finder
Micro Niche Finder is really a more robust keyword research tool – there’s no doubting that. It uses Google’s search data and presents you with much more information. One feature that is notably missing from Keywords Magnet is the ability to retrieve search volume data. That is a pretty basic feature and something that Micro Niche Finder excels at. Where Keywords Magnet out performs Micro Niche Finder is simply in the discovery of long tail keywords via the Google Suggest method described earlier. Micro Niche Finder relies on Google keyword data and so it is not as adept at finding those long tails.
Comparing Keywords Magnet to Brad Callen’s Niche Finder
Like Micro Niche Finder, Callen’s Niche Finder also relies upon Google adwords data for its search data. What this means is you will not find the deep long tail keywords from Niche Finder that you will with Keywords Magnet. However, Niche Finder does have more search related data including search volume data that is absent from Keywords Magnet.
What We Don’t Like About Keywords Magnet
This is being a bit picky really but the interface is a bit juvenile when compared to tools like Market Samurai or Micro Niche Finder. The bottom line is that it gives you the information you want and need, but it could be presented more elegantly. But, for the price and the added features that it offers beyond Market Samurai, we still really like Keywords Magnet.
The biggest limitation of Keywords Magnet is that it doesn’t retrieve keyword search volume data and so for that you will still be left going to another tool or relying on the Google external keywords tool. Another sore spot is that for competitive and/or keyword analysis you will have to do them one keyword at a time.
Keywords Magnet Pricing
Pricing is definitely a big plus for Keywords Magnet is in the same price point as its competitors at $99. Putting it on par with Brad Callens Niche Finder at $97, Market Samurai at $97 to $147, Micro Niche Finder at $99 and is just a bit more expensive that Ledger Keyword Snatcher at $47 – but remember, Keyword Snatcher is no longer being sold, so you can’t get it at any price right now. In terms of functionality Keywords Magnet surpasses its apparent primary target of Keyword Snatcher and adds our favorite features of Market Samurai as well.

Personally, I am really interested on this tool but I found it has been lifted to $99.

Yes the price went from $47 to $59 to $99 in the time after our review – sorry. But it is a great tool and still worth the $99 price.
