Doing Your Own SEO on Multiple Sites?
The cost of tools and subscriptions can really add up – trust us, we know. It’s tough enough when you’re only promoting one site, but when you start promoting multiple sites it gets even more complicated. But remember our motto, work smarter not harder…
What you need to do is identify effective SEO tools and subscriptions which are also applicable to multiple sites and can be scaled up cost effectively as well. Many of the tools on the site here fit right into that solution, but we’ve never really talked about them in this way, so today I wanted to quickly put together a list of what we’d recommend as a toolset for someone looking to promote multiple sites and do-it-themselves.
- Linxboss – With the standard subscription you get support for 5 domains and 200 links per domain. You can, however, scale that up significantly. They have several larger packages available from an additional 5 pack for $97, a 10 pack for $180 or a 20 pack for $320. Larger packages are custom quoted. But if you do the math on the base subscription plus a 20 pack for example, you’re at $469 for 25 domains and 5000 links – just 9 cents per link. And since Linxboss has no content requirements, that’s all you need.
- The Link Juicer – The standard subscription is $47 and provides you 1500 links per month. The Link Juicer gets a strong recommendation from us as they have really increased their indexing rate and effectiveness a lot in the past couple of months. We’ve ramped up our usage of it a lot lately. Now, they offer upgrades of a 5 pack for $188, a 10 pack for $335, a 25 pack for $703, a 50 pack for $1203 and a 100 pack for $2000. Needless to say, they’ve got plenty of room for growth. Assume that you go with the 25 pack with them, you’re looking at $750 for 39,000 links per month – less than 2 cents per link. For The Link Juicer you will need some 250 word blurbs, but you can spin them (and must to be effective). You only need a couple or three 250 worders per site per month if you spin them well.
- SENukeX – Now, SENukeX doesn’t have any domain restrictions, so you can use it on as many domains as you see fit. The content requirements are totally dependent upon what strategy you employ and what level of promotions you pursue. However, if you plan it out well, you can use highly spun content and keep the content costs down.
- Backlink Booster – With all of those links coming in, Backlink Booster is a very wise complimentary choice. For example, The Link Juicer gives you full URL reports of all of your links so you can just batch upload them in a matter of a couple of minutes of effort and let Backlink Booster get even more of them indexed.
- Unique Article Wizard or Article Demon or Article Marketing Robot – Now honestly there is no reason you have to just pick one. We use all three continuously for added punch and diversity. However, if you’re budget constrained then start with one and add another as you can. Unique Article Wizard is a monthly subscription and the other two options are one-time purchases. They both have their pros and cons. UAW has really done well lately (since Panda update) about cleaning up their network and is faster to use than the offline submitters. However both Demon and AMR will give you full URL reports of all links (we like that) that you can throw into Backlink Booster. If you’re doing volume, I’d recommend purchasing both offline submitters since they are one-time purchases and submit your content out both for added links. No matter which way you go, don’t forget that you’re going to need a lot of spun content and that will add up.
With that arsenal of tools (or a sub-section thereof) you should be off to a great start of getting lots of links, though mostly low PR links. For added higher authority links you should add Build My Rank and Linkvana into the mix as well as you can afford to. BMR is very cost effective at only $59 a month (though you’ll have to pay more for more domains). Both of these, however, will have significant added content costs.
Don’t Forget About Spinning
One thing you’re going to have a need for without a doubt if you’re doing this much SEO is a good quality spinner and there is none better than The Best Spinner. We have just been amazed by all of the improvements that continually get added to this tool. We seriously need to update our review of it as dozens of new little features have since been added. We see a new update several times a month from Jon Leger and it’s always great stuff.
Now we’ve received lots of concerns from people about spinning in general post-panda, but most of it is a non issue. Spinning will not hurt your site or hurt your SEO efforts unless done very poorly. Even then it won’t hurt you, it just will hurt your pocket book since you’ll just be throwing away money for no links. I’ll be talking a lot about this in our new Feeding the Panda – Effective SEO For Today’s Post Panda Era and Beyond…” eBook next week, so make sure to look for that. The main concern is that you spin at a high quality factor and not overly aggressive. If you do that your content will still get picked up well.
The Biggest Mistake You Can Make
Yeah, I figured that headline might get your attention. Please read and review this blog post – Article Submission – The Three Month Phenomenon – you need to. The point is that you will likely see some fluctuation in effectiveness at the three or four month point and you need to be prepared for that and just keep plowing through.
It is absolutely amazing to us how many people have the false mindset that if you are doing SEO your rankings will always just go “up, up, up” – but we see it each and every day. The fact is guys, it just doesn’t work that way and it’s best you get this into your mind sooner than later. If you want to be effective with SEO then you better master “patience” because it is the most necessary ingredient on your part for a winning recipe. Look at this chart below.

Now, in this view it doesn’t look so bad, but look in the next image below where it’s zoomed in a bit. When you look more closely there were some very radical drops here – 50+ spots – and they happened numerous times. Also look at the first chart and you’ll see various periods of no change at all, no progress, times that make you frustrated – it’s all part of the process.
Look at the top right of this second chart and you’ll see another trend that is encountered often and can be a real frustration builder. See the period of time where the rankings just kept gradually tapering off? No matter what we did they just kept gradually getting worse and worse, slowly falling off. But continued effort is all you can do and you’ll notice that after a few weeks it bounced back up and to a higher ranking. That is very, very common.
I know you probably know by now that I’m ex-military (a Navy submariner). Well I like to compare this trend to solders in battle taking the beach. You surge ahead and take some ground and then you end up slowly giving some of it back as the enemy mounts its defenses – and then you surge again and take more. This cycle repeats itself (at least for those that are successful). So that’s really the real question here, right? Are you willing to do what it takes to be successful? Even if that means a year long surge and re-group, surge and re-group process? If you’re not, you’re likely not cut out for SEO.

The fact is guys, these rankings bounce around a lot and they also go through periods where there is no or little growth. You can’t let that get you discouraged, you just have to keep plugging away. Think of it this way (it’s not nearly this simple, but this helps to illustrate the point). Let’s say that you’re keyword is “stagnant” – not making any progress – but you’re still actively building links for it. Now let’s say that the fact you’re unaware of is that it will take you another 3000 or so links before that keyword will move further (again, don’t worry about the numbers, this is just a made up scenario). If you’re adding a 1000 links a month, it may very well appear “stagnant” for the next three months. It will falsely “appear” as though you’re making no progress. But the fact is you’re making very solid progress but the bar is just raised a bit and it will take some time.
This is very, very common. Furthermore, this is complicated the closely you get to your objective. The closer you get to page #1 or position #1 (even more compounded) the harder it gets to move up each position because of increased competition. Does that mean you give up? Of course not. Does that mean your SEO is not working? Of course not. It means that you need to understand that this is a process and that you have to be consistent and have patience. If you look at the first chart above you’ll see it’s over a one year period. That was a very competitive keyword and it took a year to go from out of the top 1000 to #1 – a full year – and a lot of effort and backlinks. Sometimes what you need is just time and patience – sorry to say it, but that’s part of the essential mindset of SEO.
And then there’s Reporting…
When people talk about reporting and SEO they’re generally talking about Rank Tracking and there is no better than SEO PowerSuite’s Rank Tracker in our opinion. We’ve been using it for years and are very pleased with it. You’ll be able to monitor your sites very effectively and that is the first key to improvement – knowing where you’re at. It’s hard to get where you want to go if you don’t know where you’ve been… But one often forgotten about part of analysis and reporting is measuring and observing what you’re accomplishing via link analysis as well. For that you’ll need SEO SpyGlass and that is getting more important as well post panda. I’ll also be talking about some advanced tracking recommendations in the upcoming eBook as well that will help you keep a better eye on the target.

These are great resources, but I am only just starting out now and I am strapped for cash. So at the moment I will have to do the link building manually

Have you guys ever come across a tool with a geo-specific focus? I do Local SEO work for many client sites and am using BMR, Linxboss, UAW and AMR quite successfully. My only wish is more links from domains that include the state or city name AND actually have locally oriented ocntent on them. This type of system is #1 on my wish list.
